Ruth Dawson Napaljarri
Biography
Ruth is a Warumungu speaker born in Tennant Creek, and she has also family ties with the community of Marlinja (Newcastle on Water). Her mother was a very important Warumungu leader and helped to establish the Illustrated Warumungu dictionary. She learnt painting by herself and in school when she was little girl at Warrabri (Ali Curung). When they moved back in Tennant Creek in the 60s, she started to work at childcare before becoming full time artist. She painted first with the Anyingini group before joining the other artists at Pink Palace (Julalikari Arts). She joined Barkly Regional Arts in 2012. During her time in Pink Palace in 2004, her painting about Jurnukurrakur (a rockhole near Tennant Creeek) was selected to decorate a railway wagon on the freight train from Adelaide to Darwin, Ruth is a very active member of the community and participate to ceremonies, she sings and dance the Munga Munga people living in Kunjarra (The Pebbles) and Karlu Karlu (Devil Marbles).
